Why Do Stomach Spasms Occur?

,
Why Do Stomach Spasms Occur?
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Spasms can happen in any muscle or muscle group. Spasm in the stomach is one of them. It is caused by involuntary contractions of the muscles in the stomach. Spasms in other muscle groups of the body are not harmful. But stomach spasms should not be neglected. This is a symptom of an underlying disease that may pose a threat to your health.

Why Do Stomach Spasms Occur?

What are the causes of stomach spasms?

We must remember that under the muscles of our stomach is our digestive system lay. Muscle spasms in the abdomen area are usually associated to acute illnesses involving the digestion of food. Acute illnesses that cause this includes:

· Stomach flu -Stomach flu, also known as gastroenteritis, is due to a virus or bacteria. These pathogens caused the intestines and stomach to inflame. Ingestion of toxins through unsanitary food or medication might also cause stomach flu or gastroenteritis. Patients are mostly infants and children.

· Colic -Colic is characterized as an acute or severe pain in the stomach starts and ends suddenly. Infants are mostly affected by colic. Since babies' only way of complaining is through crying, babies that are normally quiet and cries suddenly may be affected by colic.

· Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) -IBS is a condition that makes the affected person changes his bowel habits with discomfort. It is a chronic disease and its usual symptom can either be diarrhea or constipation. Irritable bowel syndrome is also a common cause of stomach spasm.

Diarrhea, food poisoning and constipation alone can also be a cause of stomach muscle spasm.

To treat muscle spasm, you must treat its underlying cause. Gastroenteritis is a very fatal disease but it can be cured by antibiotics. Treating gastroenteritis must be done in a timely manner to prevent more complications. Irritable bowel syndrome is not as fatal as gastroenteritis and can be managed by the use of laxatives. Changing into a high fiber diet is also necessary if irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by constipation. In diarrhea cases, it is important to prevent dehydration. We can do this by replenishing the fluid lost with water or Gatorade to also keep the electrolytes that is lost in balance. Colic, however, tends to resolve itself on its own. No medications are prescribed by the doctor for the cure of colic. But alternative remedies like herbal medicines can be used to alleviate the pain. Alternative treatments like acupuncture and psychotherapy are also proven to be helpful in recovery from the underlying disease that caused muscle spasms in the first place. Our diet plays an important role to avoid muscle spasms. We must maintain a healthy eating habit to prevent stomach muscle spasm. Eating foods rich in fiber like veggies, fruits, wheat, whole grain, oatmeal and more helps a lot. Drinking the advised amount of water which is 7-8 full glasses a day not only keeps us hydrated but it also aids in the digestion of our food.

All the possible underlying cause of stomach muscle spasm is curable. We just have to watch for its common symptoms so we can refer them immediately to a health care provider.

Vaginismus - Is Your Vagina Normal Size? Whats Right, a Small Tight Or a Big Loose Vagina?

,
Vaginismus - Is Your Vagina Normal Size? Whats Right, a Small Tight Or a Big Loose Vagina?
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

What is considered the normal size for the vagina? To give an accurate answer, not only could it prove to be difficult, but the chances are high in upsetting a lot of women if they have an issue with the size of their vagina. Women are funny creatures that frequently worry over the least little thing involving parts of their bodies. If something appears slightly different from another woman's then more times than not they worry and think they are abnormal in some way or other. The vagina is high on the worry list that cause women unnecessary fretting. Aside from vagina size common queries involve, vaginal infections, vaginal itching and vaginal odors.

Vaginismus - Is Your Vagina Normal Size? Whats Right, a Small Tight Or a Big Loose Vagina?

I am sure you're fully aware no woman is the same; they may appear so in many ways but very much different. Women differ in shape, height, how they handle situations, size, but more so in their personalities. This is why we have "certain" women worry over specific things while other "certain" women who when faced with the same specific things don't batter an eyelid.

Before we address the matter of what is the normal size for the vagina, we first have to find out what is meant by normal. Every vagina is normal, and the only difference you might see is in its appearance. Some vagina's may "look" big if the woman carries excess weight, while the thin woman, smaller. In relation to the above question I assume you refer to the more intimate side of the vagina i.e. tight or loose. The vagina is an organ of the body that comes in different shapes and sizes, just like pubic hair does in color; however the vaginal walls don't change there all elasticity, so a definite size for a normal vagina can't be given.

Vaginal size

The result of a relaxed vagina sees vaginal walls subside into each other. Diameter is less than 1 inch and the length about 3 to 4 inches. Size of the vagina alters when it prepares itself to accept the penis. Around the time of sexual intercourse - diameter of the vagina is not the same throughout the tunnel. The vaginas narrowest part is the opening which widens as it furthers in. Usually the vagina has a size of one and a half inches. The further inside you go the bigger the diameter. Towards the rear the diameter is commonly 2 1/2 inches. Whereas the front wall is 2 inches in length and the back end is 3 inches which gives us an estimated 6 inches. This may be sound like a load of gobbly goop when talking in terms of diameters etc, but I am afraid this is the way a normal size vagina is usually determined.

Your concern if I am right in saying is because you either, have a loose vagina and want it tightening, or you have a tight vagina that you would like to loosen.

Let us direct our attention to the loose vagina and some of the reasons why it feels slack

One common cause is childbirth. Giving birth to a baby can stretch the vagina caused by severe expansion. Women whose vagina has been damaged in delivery practice Kegel exercises to tighten their vagina. Speak to your GP if you have concerns over your vagina being too big or small. If anyone can help correct the problem it is the doctor. You don't have to become a mom to experience having a loose vagina because women in their twenties and under can suffer too. Nonetheless you're not to panic because if you haven't had a baby then it's highly unlikely the big vagina/vulva matter will happen to you. Also to set the record straight, lots of sexual intercourse will not cause the vagina to stretch and stay that way. No matter how many coupling sessions you have it won't affect vagina or vulva size, like childbirth can. Childbirth interferes with dimensions i.e. damaged muscles and other supporting tissues of the vaginal walls. Fortunately women can help prevent the vagina widening by doing postnatal exercises. Ask your GP or midwife who can advise you.

If the vaginal 'barrel' is extremely big then a result of this is unsatisfactory sex for both partners. Also due to surplus width there is a possibility of air getting into the vagina. If this happens then you may face the embarrassing situation of which we refer to as fanny farting. This is encouraged with the in out pumping movement of the penis which causes air build up in the vagina, which on release makes disturbing noises like that of someone breaking wind.

Tighten a loose vagina doing pelvic floor muscle exercises. Make yourself comfortable in a private room of the house or wherever you feel you won't be interrupted.

Squeeze the muscles at the front of the lower part of your body as if you were preventing yourself from weeing and hold this action for 10 seconds then relax, repeat and continue for 5 minutes. You are not to continue if you experience difficulty or feel pain. If possible do this 4 times a day. If over time you see no improvement speak to a gynecologist to discuss the possibility of a 'repair' operation. What this involves is drawing the weakened pelvic tissues together and firming them.

As for the tight vagina, this in contrast to the loose vagina can bring pain in sexual intercourse and other. Statistically it is highly unlikely for a woman's vagina to be too small. The symptoms that could present themselves for what seems to be caused by smallness are:

* Pain during sexual intercourse
* Unable to have sex
*Discomfort when inserting a tampon

Vaginal tightness is normally linked to a condition known as Vaginismus which affects the vaginal muscles causing them to contract if genital contact is about to be made. There are several symptoms connected with this condition:

* Involuntary uncontrolled spasms of vaginal muscles
* Frightened of pain
* Fear of penetration
* Lack of sexual desire
* Pain from inserting a tampon, finger or penis

Women have no control over these happenings which is quite scary because the symptoms are wholly spontaneous.

Types of Vaginismus

If a woman has never been able to enjoy sexual intercourse (pain free) due to muscle spasms this is called primary vaginismus. Also the type women experience difficulty inserting sanitary tampons. It can occur after years of satisfactory sex, and happen late in life. This stage is known as secondary vaginismus reasoned usually by medical conditions, traumatic experience, giving birth, surgery, or menopause. The vagina isn't as quite complex as some women make it out to be when faced with matters concerning it. Ideal treatment for a loose vagina is exercise. Your vagina may seem big because its most probably relaxed. Exercise will help UN-relax.

With the case of a tight vagina we look towards another approach as it being the more sensitive issue. It is the root cause of vaginismus which determines appropriate treatments prescribed or suggested. If an injury/infection is the cause then it's easily treated with proper medication, however if not then treatment changes.

Sex therapy: Your doctor may recommend you see a health advisor who specializes in sexual health. You may be taught some techniques to retrain your vagina to respond to penetration without flinching. It can be costly if you go private for this treatment but it is available on the NHS. Aside from self help your health advisor may suggest counseling to delve deeper into any underlying psychological issues or cognitive behavioral therapy to help change any illogical or in accurate beliefs about sex

Vaginal trainers are used to help relax vaginal muscles and help widen the vagina. There are 4 cones which look similar to a penis; they come in different sizes. The smallest one is inserted first. Take your time and use a lubricant if needed. Once accomplished you up in size and so on. Some women feel uncomfortable with the cones and prefer the relaxation and touching method. Make yourself comfortable and start touching the genitals. If you tense up, stop and try again. Try this for a couple of days before going to the next level which is to try and insert a finger gently inside the vagina. If you've had problems with tampons try inserting one now.

Fracture - Its Pathophysiology, Signs and Diagnosis

,
Fracture - Its Pathophysiology, Signs and Diagnosis
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Violence or trauma leads to a break in the bone as well as injury to the underlying structures and soft tissues. There is tear in the periosteum which covers the bone. The blood vessels which supply the bone and the periosteum are ruptured leading to haemorrhage. The haemorrhage leads to the formation of a haematoma (a swelling containing clotted blood) around the fracture site.

Fracture - Its Pathophysiology, Signs and Diagnosis

In severe fracture, nerves, skin and muscles around the fracture site may be damaged producing severe pain and loss of function. Pain may also be produced as a result of severe swelling arising from bleeding from the damaged vessels and inflammatory reaction. Complete break across bone shaft brings about deformity which presents with change in alignment and contour e.g. angulation, rotation of a limb or shortening of a limb.

When there are bone fragments over the site of fracture as occurs in comminuted fracture there is crepitation on palpation or on attempt to move injured limb. Severe pain and shortening of the affected limb also occur as a result of spasm of the surrounding muscles. Severe pain and haemorrhage as occurs in open fracture produce shock.

Injury to underlying organs or tissues e. g. Brain, lungs, urinary bladder, spinal cord etc may occur as the broken bone ends penetrate into them thereby leading to brain injury, pneumothorax, bladder perforation, or paralysis. The bone may also damage the nerve supply to the part thereby causing thereby causing paralysis e.g. injury to the radial nerve as a result of fracture of the Radius can cause paralysis of the arm.

Communication of the bone end with the exterior and presence of an open wound give opportunity for micro-organisms to infect the wound. This may lead to osteomyelitis (Inflammation of the bone marrow) if not properly handled.

Signs and symptoms of fracture
1. Severe pain: Fracture is usually accompanied by a very severe pain. Pain from fracture is about the worst pain so far. The kind of pain sometimes is enough to make the patient go into a state of shock if not controlled.

2. Deformity: Deformity occurs especially with fracture of the limbs. The part below the affected limb can be rotated outwards or inwards. In some cases the affected limb is shorter than the second.

3. Loss of function: The individual is unable to make use of the affected part due to pain, tenderness or deformity. One obvious sign of fracture of the lower limb is that patient cannot walk with the affected limb. In case of the arm the patient can also not lift with the affected limb or move it above the head.

4. Muscle spasm: There is usually involuntary muscle contraction around the fracture site. This is often responsible for the severe pain and shortening of the limb.

5. Oedema: There is severe swelling around and below the fracture site as a result of effusion of blood into the surrounding tissues. Oedema could also be due to inflammatory reaction from the injury.

6. Crepitation: Crepitation is heard or felt as the patient attempts to move the affected part or on palpation. This is due to the bone fragments rubbing against one another.

7. Paralysis: Paralysis of the affected part may occur if the broken bone end pierces the nerve supplying the part. For example if the broken bone of the femur hits the femoral nerve there is going to be paralysis of the leg. Fracture to the forearm could lead to bone fragment piercing the radial nerve and subsequently paralysis of the forearm and the hand.

8. Discoloration: Discoloration of the site occurs as a result of the effusion of blood under the skin. This is referred to as ecchymosis.

Diagnosis of fracture
1. Presenting signs and symptoms: Signs and symptoms such as Crepitation, shortening, outward or inward rotations are diagnostic.
2. X-ray: This will reveal part of the bone that is broken.

What Are the Causes of Calf Muscle Spasms?

,
What Are the Causes of Calf Muscle Spasms?
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Muscle spasm, also known as muscle cramps, can happen to any of us. We are all candidates for it so we must be careful. Calf muscle spasms are very painful. It is the involuntary contraction of your muscles in the calf due to many reasons. We must know this reason so that we can prevent ourselves from experiencing a very excruciating pain from muscle cramps.

What Are the Causes of Calf Muscle Spasms?

To be clear, muscle cramps can affect any muscle or muscle group. But most of the time, muscles in the thigh, feet and calf are affected. Muscle cramp in the calf is also called "Charley horse". To prevent yourself from experiencing muscle cramps, you can take note of these safety precautions:

o Always stretch before any activities. Whether it is participating in a new sport or exercise, always stretch. Stretching your muscles helps a lot because they prepare your muscle for stress. Sudden application of stress to your muscles causes fatigue and it may result to cramps.

o Take it easy with new activities. If you have been practicing a sedentary lifestyle and you decide to participate in a new sport, remind yourself to take it easy. We get it, you are excited. But this sudden stress applied to your muscles makes your muscles tired. If the activity is prolonged, you might experience the cramps while you are still doing the activity. Make the change gradual to prevent calf cramps.

o Drink lots of water. Keeping yourself hydrated at all times is the key to preventing dehydration-induced calf muscle cramps.

o Check your electrolytes. Your electrolytes send the messages to your muscle. If they are not at a normal level, they may not function properly. Because they are your messenger to your muscles, your muscles might not function at it's full potential too. This can also be a risk factor for muscle cramps.

o Eat healthy! Eating leafy vegetable, fruits, fish, dairy products, eggs, peanuts, and grains provide calcium, magnesium and potassium. These minerals, when lacking in our body can also cause muscle cramps.

If you are already experiencing the pain, then try these tips to alleviate the signs and symptoms.

o If you feel that you are about to have cramps, stop what your doing. Proceeding with the activity will only intensify the pain. Sit down and relax. The pain will eventually go away after a few minutes. After that, minimize the activity that you will do.

o Massage. Massage the affected area. Massaging it will increase the blood flow to the muscle that is having cramps.

o Apply hot and/or cold packs. The hot packs will increase the blood flow to the affected area while the cold packs will alleviate the pain from the muscle cramps.

Causes and Treatments of Muscle Spasm

,
Causes and Treatments of Muscle Spasm
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Most people at some point in their lives experience an acute or chronic muscle spasm in response to things like pain, muscle strain, inflammation, symptoms of disease, or dehydration. The causes of a single or sustained spasm are many, but the response is typically the same. Let us consider for a moment how spasms occur, and the ways that spasms can be treated or prevented.

Causes and Treatments of Muscle Spasm

A muscle spasm is an involuntary muscular contraction that is the result of some form of tissue distress. If you strain a muscle by lifting a heavy object or twisting while carrying a load, or overstress a particular muscle through repetitive motion - something like carpal tunnel syndrome, for instance - the associated inflammation can contribute to spasms and associated pain, weakness, and instability in that muscle group.

Muscle spasms are possible due to a number of unique conditions in the body. Poor diet and dehydration may surface as nocturnal leg cramps that affect the calves. Victims of cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, gastric reflux, tetanus, irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroidism, and stroke can experience debilitating spasms as part of their disease process. Malnutrition during alcoholism can contribute to permanent nerve damage called neuropathy that manifests as spasmodic episodes.

In addition to overexertion experienced by athletes and workers alike, other potential contributors to spasms include vomiting, pregnancy, exposure to poison, reactions to certain drugs, and trauma. There are also two forms of dystonia - in effect, a brain deficiency - that can be a primary or secondary cause of muscle spasm, either acquired as part of another condition or inherited from a parent.

Depending on the muscle group, these spasms have varying degrees of severity. For example, a leg cramp or neck cramp caused by overexertion or poor posture is certainly different from a heart attack, but they are essentially the same response. In both cases, an overstressed muscle reacts to excessive stress with inflammation, contraction, and pain. They all, however, have similar characteristics.

The muscle tissue may feel hard to the touch or knotted and the sustained contraction may generate a dull or intense pain that can last for seconds or hours. A key factor to consider in recovering from such a spasm is that stretching the muscle and exercising or staying mobile will promote healing in two ways.

First, sensible and cautious activity will prevent muscle atrophy that further weakens the tissue over time if the muscle group is not stimulated. Second, increased blood flow to the injured area will bring vital nutrients to the tissues to help them heal more quickly.

So, how does one treat a muscle spasm? In general, spasms that are sudden and episodic or caused by hyperflexion or overexertion are remedied with rest, stretching or flexing the affected muscles, massage, or anti-inflammatory drugs like NSAIDs. Using these techniques, sufferers usually experience relief and gradual strengthening of muscles within minutes or a few hours, with the exception of lower back pain or more serious strains that may take days to heal.

If these spasms persist beyond a week or two, a visit to your local doctor may be necessary to pinpoint the root cause or investigate a more serious condition that may be developing

Back Pain Muscle Spasms

,
Back Pain Muscle Spasms
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Back pain will always be a cause of worry to many and it is usually as a result of any type of injury in the back. In normal circumstances, the body mechanism will attempt to protect the damaged back from injury, an action normally which is involuntary. Muscle spasms occur when the muscle fibers contract as a reaction to the inflammation caused by the injury.

Back Pain Muscle Spasms

These spasms may give a sharp pain around the area of injury reason being the contraction of the muscles will always result in tremendous muscle tightening. These muscles problems are normally treated in the traditional way assuming there is no serious injury to the spinal cord or the vertebrae. When one suffers from these back pains, treatment the traditional way may be a good way to go about it though it is also wise to consult a doctor.

Back Pain Muscle Spasms will usually bring about pain in the arms and legs. One will also feel weak and numb when this condition is faced. Some people suffering from this condition will also suffer from sleeplessness, fever and weight loss. Keeping up with daily routine may ply an important role in the healing process. Lying in bed all the time may not be as useful as many people will tend to think or recommend. It is not as easy as it was before injury, but it helps in the healing process.

Using ice is another important way in keeping the spasms at bay as it fights the inflammation in the injured area. After use of the ice, it is recommended to use hot water after three days for the complete healing process. Massage is also recommended after the treatment process of Back Pain Muscle Spasms.

Vaginismus Or Muscle Spasm on Penetration - Vaginal Spasm Makes Sexual Intercourse Impossible

,
Vaginismus Or Muscle Spasm on Penetration - Vaginal Spasm Makes Sexual Intercourse Impossible
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Vaginismus or vaginal muscle spasm on penetration makes sex impossible. You may have noticed that I have not used the term "fidget" to describe any female sexual dysfunction. I have not because I consider such a term to be a judgemental pejorative belonging to an earlier era of sexual repression. It may have been applied however to, among other things, muscular spasm to the vaginal entrance preventing intercourse. Today this is called 'vaginismus' and it can put a real strain on your daily life, as well as your sex life. Indeed it can spiral into a major problem you feel you'll never find a cure for. It can make a woman feel utterly inadequate and miserable. Her sex partner also will often incorrectly blame himself and this can make matters even worse.

Vaginismus Or Muscle Spasm on Penetration - Vaginal Spasm Makes Sexual Intercourse Impossible

If that happens to you, it is very easy to feel that no one fully understands what you are going through, or is prepared to take your vaginismus seriously. Searching for a quick fix for your problem, it is likely you will consider the many pills, exercises and vaginal dilators available both online, and in some cases, as a prescription via your GP.

Vaginismus is defined as the involuntary contractions or spasm of the muscles surrounding the vaginal opening causing pain and preventing penetration. In its more severe forms, the tensing may also extend to muscles of the inner thigh and abdomen.

Vaginismus may be either primary or secondary. Primary vaginismus is where the woman has had the problem from the very first attempt at intercourse. In this case there is often a background of strict religious orthodoxy where sex is depicted as 'dirty' or sinful or simply as painful and as something that has to be endured to please men.

Secondary vaginismus on the other hand is the situation where the woman once enjoyed sex to the full but, because of some traumatic experience like a rape or very difficult childbirth, developed vaginismus as a result of that assault.

Treatment consists of (a) relaxing the muscles of the pelvic floor and vaginal opening through specific relaxation exercised and (b) gentle and graded dilatation of the vagina using finger(s) and specially graded vaginal dilators known as boogies. Remember that practically all vaginismus is curable but it does take time and some effort. There is no quick fix.

Attending a skilled sex councilor is often the best way forwards.

Why Do Muscles Spasm?

,
Why Do Muscles Spasm?
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Whether you are running around with your team mates or simply waking up in the morning, you can experience having muscles spasms. It is because muscle spasms are involuntary and usually happen all of a sudden. Muscle spasms or muscle cramps are quick contractions of the muscle and can be painful when experienced.

Why Do Muscles Spasm?

Muscle spasms are commonly confused with muscle twitch but they are very different in such a way that muscle twitch is a very small movement on the muscle and you may not notice it.

There are basically three types of muscles in your body. They are the ones responsible for all your movements. The cardiac muscle is the muscle found in your heart which main function is to pump blood that will reach your whole body. The skeletal muscles are muscles that supports your bones that functions to move your external body parts like your arms and legs. Smooth muscles are the ones found inside the body, more specifically in the internal organs. Smooth muscles can be found in the lining of your esophagus, intestines and stomachs. They can also be found in the large arteries and in the uterus of women.

Because muscles can be found everywhere in your body, you can also experience spasm anywhere in your body like heart spasm and stomach spasm. So how do you get muscle spasm?

There are several reasons to muscle spasm. However, it also depend upon different factors, the body or part of the body involved as well as the lifestyle of a person and his environment.

You may experience if you overuse your muscles. That is why it is very common for athletes to have muscle cramps due to long hours of training and intense physical activities during a game or performance. Construction workers and jobs that involve lifting heavy equipment can also cause spasm. A hot weather is also a big factor for having muscle spasm.

Spasms can also happen when you over-stretch your muscles and when you put them in a position for a long period of time. Because of this, the muscles in the area being stretched or positioned get exhausted and they lose energy. In return, the muscles which also run out of fluid become hyper excitable creating a forceful and painful muscle contraction. You may experience spasms in both small and large muscle area in your body.

You can experience muscle spasm by doing your everyday tasks as well. Simply sweeping the floor or raking the snow can cause spasm into your neck and shoulder.

If you are doing a new exercise or work out, you can also be prone to having muscles spasms. This is very common to those who starts to work on their abdomen by doing sit ups too much quickly.

Muscle Spasms

,
Muscle Spasms
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Muscles are made up of elastic fibers that not only give general shape to the body, but also contract to move its various parts. The body gets its frame and shape from the skeleton muscles. These are voluntary muscles. The contraction of these muscles is consciously determined by the living being. In other words, living beings have total control over their body.

Muscle Spasms

But sometimes, these voluntary muscles contract involuntarily. In the process, they tighten the muscles and generate pain, making it hard to move that part of the body. This kind of untimely involuntary, violent contraction or knot in the muscles is called a Muscle Spasm.

In short, muscles flex and extend in the affected part of the body at the same time. This generally results when the muscle is under 'pressure' or is overused. A Muscle Spasm attacks a whole joint, leaving that part of the voluntary muscle in a state of 'shock' for some time. It may begin as an awkward sensation that soon spreads in the affected area. The muscles in that whole area then become so tight and stiff that they hurt severely. The most recommended instant aid is to put ice on the affected area, and stretch it. Muscle Spasms mainly affect arm, neck, leg and other such joints that are flexible to reflexes and movements.

Muscle Spasms mostly occur due to excessive use of the muscles. This may be strenuous exercise, stress, muscle fatigue caused by unused muscles for sometime, and dehydration resulting from loss of body fluid. Muscle Spasm may occur from an injury, accident or even muscle diseases. It may also occur if one does not make use of the body muscles and joints regularly, affecting its function. For instance, many older people restrict the movement of their body. This makes the usually flexible, voluntary muscles and joints become rigid. As a result, any minor stimulation makes them susceptible to spasms. Hence, in order to reduce the chances of Muscle Spasms or cure an attacked body part, one needs to follow a range of stretch exercises. There is supportive medication for Muscle Spasms. But the best method is to take a balanced diet, follow an exercise regime, and check on stress and strain. There should also be the required amount of calcium, phosphate, sodium, magnesium and other essential vitamins and minerals in the diet. Even though Muscle Spasms are known to cause tight knots in the muscles, reducing flexibility to control movements voluntarily, it is found to retain the muscle strength intact.

Back Muscle Spasms: Causes and Treatments

,
Back Muscle Spasms: Causes and Treatments
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

A common cause of back pain is muscle spasm. A spasm is an involuntary, often painful contraction of a muscle. Spasms frequently occur in the muscles of the lower back, since these muscles are heavily relied upon both when moving and sitting or standing still.

Back Muscle Spasms: Causes and Treatments

A muscle spasm indicates that the muscle has run out of energy. Muscles rely on a contraction/relaxation cycle to pump nutrients and waste in and out. Oxygen and electrolytes are delivered through the blood to muscles during this cycle, making sure they have energy to work.

A muscle runs out of energy when it is held in the same position for a prolonged period of time, when it is overstretched or when it is overused. If you sit for a long time, your lower back muscles will not receive fresh nutrients and oxygen from blood to continue supporting the upper body. If you slouch or hyper-extend, your lower back muscles will be overstretched. The muscles will attempt to contract in order to protect against tearing. If you have an overuse injury, the muscle has worked too hard and was not given the chance to relax, rid its waste products and take in fresh blood.

To protect itself from further movement, a muscle that has run out of energy forcibly contracts. The inflammation surrounding injured muscles is also thought to foster spasms, since it disrupts normal nerve signaling to the muscles involved.

The main symptoms of a muscle spasm are:

Localized pain in the affected muscle, beginning with a movement or after activity
Sensation of tightness in the muscle
Tangible swelling of the muscle

Treatment

Spasms can become chronic if: you have a muscle imbalance causing a muscle to be constantly overstretched; you regularly maintain a static position for prolonged periods of time, especially with poor posture; you practice improper body mechanics leading to an overuse injury, such as improper lifting technique; you are an athlete who constantly overuses certain muscle groups.

Acute spasms often reside within seconds or minutes. For chronic spasms, treatment depends on the situation causing the problem. General treatment methods for muscle spasms are:

Rest for a day or two
Ice for the first two days
Gentle stretching after period of rest
Heat application after gentle stretching

People with chronic spasms will need to combine these general approaches with cause-specific measures to alter their harmful behavior patterns. Those with muscle imbalances will benefit from working with a physical therapist trained in identifying and rectifying imbalance. A combination of myofascial release for overly-tight muscles and targeted exercise for weak, overstretched muscles will help to prevent spasms in the future.

If you habitually maintain one position for a prolonged period of time, a lifestyle change is in order. To prevent further spasms, you'll need to find ways to keep moving throughout the day. Those with office jobs, for example, may choose to get out of their seats every hour or so and take a quick walk around the office or stretch by their desks.

Overuse injuries generally require a reworking of posture and movement patterns. Athletes benefit from myofascial release and strengthening weak muscle groups to provide better muscle balance. Those with jobs that require lifting may benefit from movement retraining such as the Alexander Technique. This treatment program can be pursued under the guidance of a trained practitioner or independently - and for free - from your own home. More on this can be found at http://www.alexandertechnique.com/.

While muscle spasms are often a brief inconvenience, for some they become a source of chronic back pain. If you have muscle spasms regularly, it is a sign that something is wrong in your body that needs fixing.

Muscle Spasms In The Back

,
Muscle Spasms In The Back
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

The irregular, abnormal, spontaneous or involuntary contraction of a muscle is known as spasm. Muscle spasms in back areas of the body near the spinal cord or nerve roots can be most painful and in some cases debilitating. The spasms in back muscles can be due to many reasons, and when this happens, the person feels the forcible tightening of the muscle and its surrounding tissues. Injury, an advanced degenerative condition, or in some cases deprivation of oxygen can be causing the muscle spasms.

Muscle Spasms In The Back

A person's back is an intricate combination of muscles, bones, and other tissues from the neck to the pelvic area. Some back injuries are caused by working around the house or out in the garden, bending and stretching thereby pulling and damaging muscles and ligaments. Sports can also be a reason for a back injury, or a sudden bump or jolt as when an accident happens. Because of the natural structure of the body, spasms in back muscles happen in the lower portion where the functions of bending and stretching have the most effect on the spine and the muscles surrounding it.

Sprains and strains, herniated discs and fractured vertebrae are among the most common back injuries and causes of patients' complaints. These injuries can limit a person's movement and can be a cause of considerable pain. There are various treatments available but usually recommended are pain medicines, ice packs, bed rest, physical therapy or in extreme cases, surgery. Back injuries can be prevented by being watchful while concentrating on your tasks, maintaining the ideal weight, using care in the lifting of objects, and using lower-back support while sitting. Spasms in back areas can be relieved with hot compresses and special oils and unguents.

A person experiencing muscle spasms in back sections of the torso for the first time will most probably go right to hospital for emergency treatment due to the extreme pain. In some cases, the back pains should not cause a panic attack and may not need emergency treatment because it might respond to rest and go away on its own after a spell. Taking too many pain killers and other pills may make a person dependent on them, so this should be avoided if possible.

Injury that results in back pain conditions may be caused by twisting, pulling or pushing resulting in spasms in back areas of the body. Rigorous exercises may be one of the causes of injury and continuous exercises may sound good for you; but two or three hours of back-breaking exercises will cause torn muscles and tendons. The spine is designed to be resistant to vertical weight and its curves are meant for flexibility. When a person is carrying considerable weight, the spinal curve may temporarily increase to cushion the pressure that is exerted on the vertebrae. By carrying weight on the head, the centre of gravity is concentrated on the spinal axis relieving back muscles of too much strain. Spasms in back muscles are avoided by lessening the strain on your lower back. A disc fissure may warrant surgical procedures because when the fibrous envelope enclosing the disc rips and protruding or slipped disc results, the pain can be debilitating. Muscle spasms in back promontories also happen in these cases where the disc bulge causes pinching of the nerves.

The muscles in the back are some of the strongest and biggest muscles of the body. They are responsible for maintaining posture and balance. When spasms in back muscles happen, and it is not attributed to injury or medical-related physically debilitating conditions, it maybe caused by low oxygen levels in the muscles. This is called ischemia and usually leaves no permanent effect after it has passed. Just relax and breathe...

Back Pain Muscle Spasms - Finding the Culprits

,
Back Pain Muscle Spasms - Finding the Culprits
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

You have long muscles that run along the spine called the erector spinae muscles. These are often the guilty muscles when you have back pain and muscle spasms. A spasm is an involuntary contraction of the muscle for a sustained period of time. Usually a spasm occurs when the muscle has been suddenly stressed somehow which can include injury, sprains, tears or bruising. The spasm can actually start in the nerves that lead into the muscle though the feeling is the same no matter where the spasm starts.

Back Pain Muscle Spasms - Finding the Culprits

Most of the time muscle spasms are painful, but not serious. It should be mentioned though that in some cases, the spasm may be a symptom of a more serious problem. The back is composed of bones, muscles and ligaments, and injury or disease to any component can result in back pain muscle spasms.

Back pain and muscle spasms can occur anywhere along the spine from the neck to the lower back. A spasm can occur once or it can happen repeatedly. Often the spasm makes the muscle feel sore and tight even after the spasm subsides. So when you deal with muscle spasms you have two goals. The first goal is to attempt to prevent the recurrence of the spasm. The second goal is to relive the pain and tension after the spasm.

There are many ways you can approach management of back pain and muscle spasms at home. First, you should keep moving. You don't want to go to bed and lie still, because that will cause the muscle to hurt more. Light exercises will relieve the muscle stress while strengthening and toning. Also, you can use an ice pack applied to the area and decrease the muscle spasm pain. In addition, you should avoid any heavy lifting or moves similar to the moves you were doing before the spasm.

If your back pain and muscle spasms don't get better with home remedies, you may have to visit the doctor. Frequently, muscle relaxants are prescribed to relieve muscle tightness. Muscle relaxants are a short term solution meant to give relief from pain while the muscle heals. Some people find enough relief by using over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers. Many medications you can now buy yourself are what were once considered full prescription strength. All of the drugs can reduce swelling and increase muscle flexibility.

Other forms of therapy for back pain [http://releasebackpain.com/back] and muscle spasms include massage or physical therapy. But one of the most important therapies you can do yourself. That's to maintain good posture. Good posture lets your spine work the way it was designed to work. Maintaining good posture is important during any activity too and not just while standing. You should stand, sit, walk and lift while maintaining proper spine position. This will help you avoid muscle injury and sprains that can lead to muscle spasms.

Lower Back Spasms - How to Cope With Lower Back Spasms

,
Lower Back Spasms - How to Cope With Lower Back Spasms
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Lower back spasms are unexpected and involuntary contractions, or tightening, of a muscle or a group of muscles in the back. The contraction that occurs during a lower back muscle spasm is involuntary; the brain sends signals, which are not willed by the body, to the muscles to contract. Tightening of the back muscles can result from inflammation that occurs when a muscle is strained, stretched, pulled tightly or ruptured.

Lower Back Spasms - How to Cope With Lower Back Spasms

It can happen if you are sitting at your desk, exercising, picking up something incorrectly, straining your back in some way or otherwise stretching the muscles in your back region. Contractions or tightening of back muscles can even be caused by stress, anxiety and/or depression. People have had a spasm occur from a simple sneeze or cough, or even while sleeping. Lower back spasms can occur in people who have no signs at all of general or even specific muscle stiffness or problems.

The duration of a back muscle spasm can remain from seconds to hours. Although not a life-threatening condition, muscle contractions or spasms can result in excruciating pain on the affected muscles. Painful muscle spasms can disrupt your life for a few days or a few weeks and can even incapacitate a person for a period of time.

Treatment of lower back muscle spasms can be difficult because a muscle contraction or tightening can occur with many kinds of injuries and disease processes. Severe cases of muscle spasm can be treated with physical therapy and medication. For muscular spasm, application of local heat may be helpful. Muscle relaxant medications such as diazepam and flexeril can be used to treat muscular spasms. In most cases, the muscle spasm will improve anywhere from a few days to a week or two. Either way, once you have had a back muscle spasm, you will never forget it and you will never want to repeat the experience.

I have been a back pain sufferer for over 25 years and have experienced lower back muscle spasms on more than one occasion. The excruciating pain associated with back muscle spasms cannot be fully understood unless you have experienced it. Migraine Headaches - 5 Methods to Relieve Them Naturally!

,
Migraine Headaches - 5 Methods to Relieve Them Naturally!
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

There are many new migraine headache treatments available that can be both safe and effective. Natural treatments for migraine headaches are usually safer and cheaper than traditional pain medications. And in many instances they can relieve pain just as well or even better than prescription or non-prescription drugs. The possibility of a negative reaction to a safe and natural migraine headache treatment is still there, but it is less with most natural treatment methods than it is with pain-relieving medications.

Migraine Headaches - 5 Methods to Relieve Them Naturally!

Every person on the face of the earth is unique. Their body chemistry is different than anyone else's. One person may find relief from their migraine headaches with one type of treatment while someone else may try that same treatment and find no relief at all. No two people will experience the same reaction from the same treatment. But why is that?

Every body is made up of a mixture of chemicals. Every person produces certain chemicals in their body so that they will be able to function at their best. Histamines will increase gastric secretion and dilate the capillaries. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas and helps regulate the blood sugar levels. Hormones are produced by the body for many different functions. Adrenaline (epinephrine) is produced in response to stress. Every body is unique and produces different chemicals in differing amounts. When a person takes aspirin (a chemical) for their migraine headaches it changes the chemical make-up of that person's body.

You've always heard that when two chemicals, in the same amounts, at the same temperature, etc. are mixed together they will cause the same reaction. That may be true, but when one chemical (such as aspirin) is taken by two separate people their reactions will never be exactly the same because no two people have identical chemicals in their body. One person taking aspirin will not have the same reaction as someone else taking aspirin. And it's the same with natural migraine headache treatments. Since no two people are identical no two people will respond exactly the same to a treatment method for migraine headaches.

So just because one migraine headache treatment does not work for one person does not mean it won't work for your migraine headaches. There are many effective alternatives to taking medications when it comes to relieving migraine headaches. You just have to try one for yourself to see if it will work for you.

One natural and popular treatment method for migraine headaches is chiropractic care, or chiropractic manipulations. Studies have shown that over 80% of headache patients find some type of relief for their headaches with chiropractic treatment. And chiropractic treatment has been shown to be extremely safe. Spinal problems cause headaches and when these spinal problems are treated by chiropractors a high percentage of their patients experience relieve from their pain.

Another natural way to relieve migraine headaches is biofeedback. This is a safe and potentially effective way to eliminate pain. Biofeedback is not actually a treatment, but a training program designed to help a person develop the ability to control their autonomic (involuntary) nervous system. Functions that are normally automatic in the body, such as blood pressure regulation or heart rate can be controlled voluntarily. This technique makes it possible for a person to control their own heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature or relaxation of their muscles.

It's no secret that stress causes muscle tension. And nobody will deny that muscle tension causes pain and headaches. And it's also a fact that by relaxing this muscle tension, especially in the neck and head, it is possible to relieve the migraine headaches or neck pain that is being caused by the tension. With biofeedback the machinery is not always necessary. Once the biofeedback technique is learned there is no longer any need for the equipment. The patient with migraine headaches can now produce the desired effect at any time. A person that has been trained with biofeedback can control some of their bodily functions, such as muscle relaxation, which can help relieve their headache pain.

Another cause of headaches can be the intake of too much salt. Some people just can't get enough of it. They pour it onto their food with wreckless abandon. And too much salt can and does cause headaches. What's the solution? Simply lessening the salt intake can sometimes prevent the headaches from occurring.

Food sensitivities have also been shown to cause migraine headaches in some people. Foods such as cheese, alcohol, MSG (monosodium glutamate - a food additive), yeast, wheat, nuts, avocados, beans, bananas, oranges (and other citrus fruits), pork, vinegar (and pickled foods), dairy products, caffeine, chocolate, onions and others can cause migraines. Foods that cause migraine headaches are called "migraine triggers." People who experience migraine headaches because of food allergies can reduce or eliminate their pain by eliminating the foods that cause the headaches.

It sounds simple, but it takes a little detective work to figure out which foods, if any, are causing the migraine headaches. So how can you determine which foods are the culprits? The logical way is to keep a diary of what you eat and when. Get a small notebook, with each page representing one day, and make three columns on each of the pages. The first column on the left side of the page will contain the hours in the day. The second column down the middle of the page will be a list of the foods eaten that day. And the third column on the right side of the page will list the symptoms (headaches) that you experience.

Here's how the food diary works: if you had an orange, cereal and milk for breakfast at 8 AM you would write "orange, cereal, milk" in the middle (food) column directly to the right of 8 AM in the left (time) column. Make a note of everything that you eat on this list and at what time you ate them.

Next, whenever you experience a migraine headache write "migraine headache" or "headache" in the right (symptoms) column that corresponds with the time (in the left column) your headache began. For example, if you started feeling pain from one of your migraine headaches at 2 PM you would write "headache" in the right (symptoms) column directly across from 2 PM in the left (time) column.

Once you've had enough time to experience a few migraine headaches you will be able to examine your food diary to determine which foods you ate shortly before you began experiencing your pain. For example, if you had 3 migraine headaches over a one-month period, and you had milk shortly before each of the migraine attacks, milk may be the culprit. It may take a few weeks or even a few months to come to any conclusions, but over time, by figuring out which foods or ingredients in these foods, are causing your pain, you will be able to eliminate these ingredients and relieve your pain caused by these foods.

Probably the most common cause of headaches is just plain old stress. People who experience tension in their lives can get headaches from their increased tension. Stress can be caused by many things including work-related stress or family-related stress. And although it's not always possible to eliminate the cause of the stress it is often possible to relieve the muscle tension and pain that originates from the stress.

Biofeedback training (as explained above) is one way to help reduce stress. Other ways are taking a warm bath or shower, lying down and relaxing in a quiet dark room, having someone massage your neck and head (temporal region) muscles to help relieve your tension and muscle spasms or placing something cold (ice) on the back of the neck (at the base of the skull). When using ice it should not be placed directly on the skin. Some wet paper towels that have had the water wrung out of them should be placed between the ice and the skin. Regular exercise can also, over time, reduce tension.

We have discussed 5 natural treatment methods that are available to migraine headache patients. They are all considered safe and are effective for many people. There are many other natural treatment methods out there for you to try. If you have headaches it may be beneficial for you to try some of these treatments or search for others on your own. But as a word of advice, it is always a good idea to talk with a chiropractor or medical doctor before treating yourself for a health condition.

Dr. Larry A. Johnson, D.C. has treated patients with migraine headaches for 25 years. He has patented a unique neck cushion that was designed to relieve migraine headaches. For information about his natural approach to relieve migraine headaches visit his site.

Top 10 Upper Human Body Pressure Points For Self Defense

,
Top 10 Upper Human Body Pressure Points For Self Defense
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

In any fight situation, (street fights, karate fights, etc.) possible body weapons include short jabs and strikes with elbows, knees, and hands. The key to winning any confrontation or street fight is to be aggressive and concentrate your attack on the opponent's vital points in order to end the fight as soon as possible. A knowledge of human body pressure points can be your key to survival.

Top 10 Upper Human Body Pressure Points For Self Defense

One way to accomplish this is to focus on your opponent's most vital areas, or pressure points. A body is separated into three main sections: high, middle and low. Each of these sections contains vital targets. The effects of striking these targets could be brutal. In this article, let's take a look at the pressure point of the High Section. This section includes the head and neck and is the most dangerous target area. Areas for attack might include:

(1) Top of the head. The skull is weakest where the front cranial bones join, right between the eyes. A powerful strike could cause trauma to the cranial cavity, possibly resulting in unconsciousness and hemorrhage.

(2) Temple. The bones of the skull are weak at the temple and an artery and large nerve lie close to the skin. A strike here could cause unconsciousness or concussion.

(3) Eyes. A slight poke in the eyes causes uncontrollable watering and blurred sight. A forceful jab could cause brief blindness or the eyes could be gouged out. Death could result if the fingers penetrate through the thin bone behind the eyes and into the brain.

(4) Nose. Any blow here could easily break the thin bones of the nose, causing extreme pain and eye watering.

(5) Under the nose. A blow to the nerve center, which is close to the surface under the nose, could cause great pain and watery eyes.

(6) Jaw. A blow to the jaw could break or dislocate it. If the facial nerve is pinched against the lower jaw, one side of the face may be paralyzed.

(7) Chin. A blow to the chin could cause paralysis, mild concussion or unconsciousness. The jawbone acts as a lever that could transmit the force of a blow to the back of the brain where the cardiac and respiratory mechanisms are controlled.

(8) Back of the ears and base of the skull. A moderate blow to the back of the ears or the base of the skull could cause unconsciousness by the jarring effect on the back of the brain. However, a powerful blow could cause a concussion or brain hemorrhage and death.

(9) Throat. A powerful blow to the front of the throat could cause death by crushing the windpipe. A forceful blow causes extreme pain and gagging or vomiting.

(10) Side of neck. A sharp blow to the side of the neck causes unconsciousness by shock to the carotid artery, jugular vein, and vagus nerve. For maximum effect, the blow should be focused below and slightly in front of the ear. A less powerful blow causes involuntary muscle spasms and intense pain. The side of the neck is one of the best targets to use to drop an opponent immediately or to disable him temporarily to finish him later.

Effective striking with the weapons of the body to the opponent's vital points is essential for a victorious outcome in a hand-to-hand struggle.

Botox Improves Appearances And Lives

,
Botox Improves Appearances And Lives
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Botox, once scoffed at for being another product for the vain, has emerged as a valuable tool to help ease a variety of ailments. It still remains most popular as a wrinkle smoother, but in recent years there have been many incredible developments, resulting in a wider use of the product to help people who suffer from such problems as excessive sweating, muscle twitches, and even incontinence. Here are some of the current ways this treatment is being used to help people not only improve their appearances, but in many ways make their overall lives much better.

Botox Improves Appearances And Lives

Erase Lines

The number one reason why patients seek botox? They want to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles that age their face. It isn't always about turning back the clock a decade either. Some people have found that poor skincare in their youth, too many days in the tanning bed, or smoking and other bad habits have led to premature ageing. That means they look many years older than they actually are and feel. This can help smooth these out and make you resemble your actual age. When you look your best and freshest, it will shine through in your daily life and your confidence will increase.

Stop Sweat

Yes, botox can actually help ease excessive sweating problems. How? It is injected into the sweat glands of the target area (commonly the underarms, soles of the feet, or palms) blocking them from producing perspiration. This can dramatically change the quality of life for people suffering from this condition. You can wear what you like and not have to worry about embarrassing interactions with people.

Stop Twitches

Have an annoying muscle spasm? Tired of people asking you why you are winking? Twitches can be difficult if not impossible to control and can cause great emotional distress as well as uncomfortable social situations. Botox can help relax the muscles that are causing these ticks so you'll no longer have to suffer through the embarrassment. In many cases, these involuntary muscle movements are also the cause of migraines, neck, and shoulder pains. By stopping the twitching, you'll find relief from these other associated problems as well.

Bladder Control

It may sound odd, but Botox can successfully treat a number of bladder problems. Incontinence or weakened bladder muscles can cause unwanted accidents and make controlling urination a daily battle. There are many people who have to suffer from this condition and it can have a hugely negative impact on their quality of life as well as their emotional wellbeing. This substance can be injected into the bladder muscles and help to relax them. These in turn allows for greater control over the bladder, which means less sudden needs for urination and a greater ability to hold liquid in when required.

Research and experiments may lead to even more uses of this wonder injectable. It still remains a low-risk drug and techniques to administer have greatly improved over the years. This treatment will likely continually surprise the public with its many uses.

For Botox, San Mateo offers a facility that provides the comfort and experience you desire. For more information, visit: http://www.susanlinmd.com/

Facing the Trauma of Uterine Fibroids

,
Facing the Trauma of Uterine Fibroids
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Uterine fibroids are tumours which grow from cells forming the muscle of the uterus. They are also called leiomyoma, myoma, fibromyoma, leiofibromyoma or fibroleiomyoma of the uterus and they can grow on the uterine wall and push out into the bladder, bowel or intestine or can grow within the uterine wall, or even project from the wall of the uterus on a narrow stalk into the uterine cavity. They can be as small as a pea and may go unnoticed but they can cause problems if they grow big.

Facing the Trauma of Uterine Fibroids

Some of the symptoms of fibroids can be following:

• Cramps
They are considered to be foreign bodies by the uterus which needs to be expelled. The resulting pressure on the uterine fibroid can cause strong spasms i.e. sudden involuntary muscular contractions.

• Constipation and Pelvic Pain
Normal bowel movements can be hampered when the fibroids press on the colon, causing pain during digestion. They also compress other organs inducing pressure which can be experienced in the form of sharp pains.

• Heavy Menstruation and Vaginal Bleeding
There can be abnormal bleeding. Some women may experience bleeding after a long time of going through menopause which indicates fibroid development.

• Urinary Infections
Fibroids can cause urinary tract infections which may lead to frequent urination or difficulty in urination.

• Abdominal Swelling and Back Pain
A bulging belly that feels hard on touching is a common symptom. Many women with fibroids can appear to be pregnant due to the swelling. In some cases, women with fibroids experience pain in the back or legs.

Besides all these symptoms, they also disturb conception. When it blocks the fallopian tube, fertilization cannot take place. When it grows near the uterine lining, implantation of the fertilized egg can be disrupted, thus causing miscarriages and sometimes women with extremely large growth may not be able to conceive simply because of the size of the fibroid.

These are quite common among women and may a times. A woman is not aware that she is having them. In such cases, they do not cause any symptoms or problems, and they remain unnoticed. Their existence can be hereditary. Conception and intake of oral contraceptives both decrease the likelihood that they will develop. They have not been observed in girls who have not reached puberty and adolescent girls rarely develop them. Some other factors that have been associated with an increased risk of developing fibroids are having the first menstrual period (menarche) before the age of 10, consumption of alcohol (particularly beer), uterine infections and high blood pressure (hypertension).

The Many Uses of Botox

,
The Many Uses of Botox
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

When people think of Botox, they usually associate it only with its cosmetic functions. While it is certainly an excellent cosmetic product, its uses are not limited simply to cosmetic ends. There are actually a number of non-cosmetic uses for which it is utilized as well.

The Many Uses of Botox

How it Works

Botox is chemical that serves to limit muscle function. In most cases, it is injected under the skin in a localized area, and, as it begins to soak into the tissue, it temporarily deadens the muscle in the area surrounding the injection site. While this may sound like a negative effect, it actually serves several desirable purposes. In many cases, too much muscle activity can actually cause problems for the individual, and injections like this can be very effective in neutralizing these problems.

Cosmetic Uses

Most often, Botox is used for cosmetic purposes. In these cases, a doctor injects the chemical in strategic places under the skin in the face. The reason for this is that by diminishing muscle activity in the face the skin - which is attached to the facial muscles - becomes looser, and this serves to soften the appearance of wrinkles. This is an effective way of reducing the appearance of wrinkles and is less invasive than other means of doing the same thing. People receiving injections for this purpose will often have them done every three to four months or as often as is recommended by a doctor.

Non-Cosmetic Uses

Aside from its cosmetic benefits, Botox is also effective at treating several muscle related conditions that are not cosmetic. The most common of these non-cosmetic conditions is a twitch or some similar involuntary muscle activity. Most often it is used to treat these involuntary muscle movements when they occur in the face since larger muscles would require more of the chemical which is safest when used in small amounts. Since it serves to diminish the ability of the muscle to contract, an injection in an area that is affected by a twitch will serve to greatly decrease the twitching that is taking place. Thus, it is an incredibly effective means of managing involuntary muscle spasms like these.

In all, Botox is an incredibly efficient chemical. It can be used to treat a variety of both cosmetic and non-cosmetic conditions. If you think you might be a good candidate to receive injections, then talk to your doctor about a possible course of treatment.

The Yips and Other Words That May Not Be Spoken on the Golf Course

,
The Yips and Other Words That May Not Be Spoken on the Golf Course
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

In some ancient cultures it was forbidden to speak aloud the name of a deity or a devil out of concern that merely speaking the name could conjure up the spirit who would then wreak havoc on the affairs of men. In our modern post-enlightenment world such behavior is treated as silly superstition although it still begs the question of why did such practices persist for thousands of years if there were never any bad consequences?

The Yips and Other Words That May Not Be Spoken on the Golf Course

In my regular foursome we respect the wisdom of the ancient elders and it is forbidden to ever speak aloud the word "sha_k" out of fear that dark demonic forces will appear and start bouncing your golf ball off the hosel of your clubs. I cannot be held responsible for the fate of any golfer who is foolish enough to challenge this hypothesis.

An almost equally feared word which I do dare here to speak is Yips. Golfers over 50 years old will remember the golf superstar of the mid to late seventies whose iron play was so precise that he used to get the yardage from his caddie in half-yard increments. For reasons unknown to mortal man however his putting game almost completely disappeared. Amazingly, and probably because his iron play was so good he was still able to win major tournaments while sometimes putting with his eyes closed,

Was that a case of the Yips? We do not know. Everybody yanks a short putt from time to time.

What we do know about the Yips is that it is a real muscular condition that occurs in about 1 in every 1,000 people from time to time. The condition is actually better-known as musicians dystonia, which is an involuntary muscle contraction or muscle spasm that occurs most often in musicians who have practiced complicated finger movements for years. These spasms are almost always painless and usually imperceptible.

If you are a golfer and you think that you may have the Yips do not, I repeat do not, start reading the medical literature about musicians dystonia because it will scare the bejeesus out of you. You will start seeing terms like basal ganglia, motor cortical activity, diffusion sensor imaging, and sensorimotor cortex and see something overwhelming you as sinister as the creature of the black lagoon.

What you think about as the Yips may be the result of spending too much time over-thinking a very simple process, moving a golf club head a few inches to hit a stationary round ball. Scratch golfers prevent the demons from controlling their golf clubs by first not speaking their names and by establishing a pre-shot routine that has you striking the ball in less than eight seconds from start to finish.

Anybody can be an excellent putter if you go here to learn the right putting techniques [http://golfputtingtechniques.com/].

End Depression and Anxiety by Feeding the Brain

,
End Depression and Anxiety by Feeding the Brain
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

The natural chemistry of the brain involves chemical messengers that work with the electrical communications between the billions of nerve cells in the brain. Called neurotransmitters, these natural chemicals bridge the gap between one brain cell to the next. They regulate our body's automatic functions, including blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, sensations including touch, pain and pleasure, and the control of body movements. They also play a major part in our moods and behavior. If our neurotransmitters are not present in adequate and balanced amounts, the electrical messages of the brain do not occur and bodily functions and moods suffer.

End Depression and Anxiety by Feeding the Brain

Regarding our moods and behavior, if our neurotransmitters are present and balanced in adequate amounts, they promote happiness, serenity, confidence, clear and constructive thinking, good memory and freedom from worry. If they are deficient and unbalanced, negative thinking and emotions run us, resulting in irritability, nervousness, lack of energy, fatigue, anger, fear, inability to relax or sleep, mood swings, difficulty learning, poor judgement, slowed reactions, lack of sex drive, inability to enjoy life, anxiety and depression.

The neurotransmitters of the brain include norepinephrine, serotonin, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) and dopamine. Each one is involved with certain brain communications, but they all work together as a balanced team for proper mental function. When the brain is able to make these neurotransmitters in good supply, they are all balanced and the brain functions like a championship team.

To make these natural nerve chemicals, the brain needs the right kinds and amounts of nutritional raw materials fed to it. Without these raw materials, one or more of these neurotransmitter chemicals becomes deficient and there is then an imbalance and the team falls apart. When the brain's chemical team doesn't function well, it leads to those negative feelings and emotions that have been given a variety of labels, including depression, anxiety, panic disorders, phobias, mania and bipolar disorder, depending on which neurotransmitters are deficient or unbalanced.

These imbalances have been "treated" for centuries with a variety of methods by practitioners who didn't understand the underlying chemical cause. Many of these methods were cruel and inhumane, such as beatings and torture, isolation, electric shock, chemical numbing, and surgical removal of parts of the brain. Some of these methods still continue today in the practice of psychiatry. This marks a poor track record on the legacy of psychiatry to help those who suffer from disorders of mood and thought.

In the 20th century, we saw the introduction of chemical treatments for mood disorders in the form of antidepressants such as Prozac, antianxiety drugs such as Valium and antipsychotic drugs such as Thorazine. The makers of these drugs had the ambition that the brain's neurotransmitters could be manipulated and controlled with manmade chemicals. The root cause of the neurotransmitter imbalances was overlooked, or ignored.

These drugs are not cures because they do not correct the underlying problem of not supplying the brain with the natural raw materials to make neurotransmitters. Not only are these drugs not cures, but they cause many dangerous side effects, including suicidal tendencies, involuntary muscle spasms, senility due to brain damage, headaches, sleeplessness, drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, loss of sex drive, impotence, tremors, dry mouth, weight gain, abnormal heart beat, low blood sugar, low thyroid function, irritable bowel and more, depression and anxiety. Yes, you read right, they can actually cause depression and anxiety.

Research shows that these medications are no more effective for helping depression and anxiety than sugar pills and can actually increase the rate of suicide and violence in school age patients. Is it any wonder that many of the suicides and acts of violence carried out in our schools were done by students taking these drugs? We're not talking about recreational drugs such as cocaine, crack, marijuana, ecstasy, alcohol or methamphetamine. We're talking about medications that were prescribed by doctors who haven't addressed the real causes of these neurotransmitter imbalances.

There are other medications that can also interfere with neurotransmittes, including blood pressure drugs such as atenolol (Tenormin), propranolol (Inderal), nadolol (Corgard), diuretics (fluid pills), gabapentin (Neurontin), prednisone, birth control pills, artificial female hormones, muscle relaxers and chemotherapy drugs.

Fortunately, there are alternative answers to dangerous medications used for depression and anxiety. The alternative requires identification of the deficient neurotransmitters and a knowledge of the right nutritional supplements to supply the brain with the right natural raw materials to balance them.

Sleep Enuresis: Causes and Treatments

Sleep Enuresis: Causes and Treatments
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

Sleep Enuresis, more commonly known as Bedwetting, refers to the lack of ability to maintain urinary control during sleep. This recurrent involuntary urination is also called Nocturnal Enuresis, which is characterized by at least two occurrences per month in 3 to 6 years old infants and at least one occurrence per month for older children.

Sleep Enuresis: Causes and Treatments

Though it is considered normal for children below 7 years old to have enuretic episodes, 5% of 10 year old and 3% of 12 year old children, and as many as 1-3% of 18-year-old teenagers may continue to experience this disorder.

Primary and Secondary Enuresis:

Primary Enuresis is involuntary urination that occurs from infancy with at least two episodes a week, and comprised of 70-90% of all cases. Secondary Enuresis, on the other hand, refers to a relapse after experiencing an extended period of dryness. Adults are more likely to suffer from the secondary type.

Causes of Sleep Enuresis:

Sleep Enuresis can be caused by many factors including hormonal, dietary, or emotional factors.

One of the most common causes of Sleep Enuresis is the inability to develop the antidiuretic hormone cycle in some people. In this cycle, which is typically developed by individuals by the age of 2 to 6, the pituitary gland releases a hormone at night that promotes water retention in the kidneys, thereby reducing urine output till sunrise. Failure to develop this hormone cycle naturally leads to Sleep Enuresis.

An overactive bladder can also cause Sleep Enuresis in many children. By nature, muscle spasms occur in the bladder during urine retention and removal. When these spasms become too active or uncontrollable, the bladder is incapable of holding the normal amount of urine, which eventually results in accidental urination during sleep.

Another common hereditary factor is failure to develop an awareness that enables a person to awaken before urinating on bed. This awareness is normally developed by children during the natural process of learning how to control the bladder while awake.

Besides these common causes, medical disorders such as diabetes, urinary tract infection, sleep apnea or epilepsy and psychiatric disorders may also cause individuals to develop Sleep Enuresis.

Treatments:

Simple behavior modifications can be very effective treatments for children with enuretic episodes. For example, intake of liquids and dietary bladder irritants such as citrus products should be discouraged before bedtime. Taking note of when the enuresis actually occurs, and waking and taking the child to toilet before that hour, can also be very helpful.

Psychological treatments such as encouragement of self-reliance, participation in management, inculcation of self-respect and responsibility are also recommended by many experts. Physical punishments and coercion, on the other hand, are considered to be the most counterproductive measures and should be avoided at all costs.

Using devices such as bedwetting alarms and moisture alarms, combined with bladder muscle exercises, dietary changes, retention control training etc can also be helpful remedies in treating Sleep Enuresis.

For some of the more severe cases that cannot be treated by behavior modification, alarm devices and other treatment methods, using medications such as Desmopressin, a synthetic substitute for the missing antidiuretic hormone discussed earlier, is found to be very effective. Desmopressins such as DDAVP, Stimate, and Minrin can easily be administered nasally or intravenously.

Resveratrol For Anti Aging Or Cosmetic Procedure?

,
Resveratrol For Anti Aging Or Cosmetic Procedure?
Involuntary Muscle Spasms :

If you had your choice of the super antioxidant, resveratrol, or an injectable cosmetic procedure to combat anti aging, which would you choose? Tough question? Let's examine the latest injectable cosmetic procedure and then we'll take a look at resveratrol.

Resveratrol For Anti Aging Or Cosmetic Procedure?

Dysport is a protein extracted from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is the first FDA approved competition for Botox as a way of removing facial lines without surgery.

Botox, manufactured by Allergan, was introduced in 2002 and grew into a huge business as the number one cosmetic procedure in the U.S. The French drug maker, Ipsen, is hoping to attract some of that business away from Botox.

This newest wrinkle defeater was first used for the treatment of motor disorders and a variety of involuntary muscular spasms, including cerebral palsy. Further development led to treatment of various neuromuscular disorders. It has been used safely in Europe for years but was not approved by the FDA for release in the U.S. until July, 2009.

The procedure to erase facial wrinkles is quite simple. Minute amounts of the new botulinum toxin are injected into the facial muscles under frown lines. The procedure lasts about 10 to 20 minutes and no local anaesthetic is required. The muscles slowly relax over the next few days after treatment. The frown muscles will then not be able to contract.

It has not been proven if either one of the two injectable procedures is superior to the other. In clinical trials the same type of positive results were reported for both treatments as well as similar occasional unwanted side effects. The side effects include headaches and bruising at the injection site. Also, misplaced injections can cause drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid. The procedure should not be used if a person is pregnant, breastfeeding or has a neuromuscular disease.

Dysport is a prescription drug and should only be administered by medical professionals. It is also not interchangeable with Botox.

Okay, now what does resveratrol have to offer?

As a super antioxidant it has become the hottest topic in anti aging. In fact, it is so popular that a small start up company, Sirtris, was purchased for almost 0M by one of the large pharmaceutical companies because they were so impressed with test results on studies run by Sirtris.

This antioxidant is produced by plants as a reaction to environmental stress such a fungal infection and insect attacks. Researchers believe it acts much the same way in other life forms.

SIRT1 is a very important protein that regulates heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) and keeps it active. When HSF1 is more active then more cells are protected against an accumulation of damage. When we start to age our Sirt1 levels decrease and our cells can't respond to stress or other outside factors as well as they once did. Now research is pointing to the theory that resveratrol can activate the SIRT1 protein!

We already know it can lower blood sugar levels, bolster the immune system, fight inflammation and protect against heart and blood vessel disease. Most recently, researchers say it could be used to treat major illnesses such a sepsis, appendicitis and peritonitis.

It truly is loaded with health benefits and is so readily available. It's most abundant source is red wine and grapes but can also be found in other food sources such as peanuts and Japanese knotwood. In addition, for convenience, resveratrol may be obtained as a supplement. As with any other supplement, your physician should be consulted first.
